Macknik Lab Broader Impact
The results from projects in the Macknik Lab are disseminated widely through publication in high-impact journals such as Nature, Neuron, PNAS, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Reviews Neuroscience. Major discoveries are followed-up with publication of articles for the lay public such as Scientific American and Barrow. Press releases to major science and news outlets announce all major findings to dozens of newspapers, TV, and internet science and news outlets. Dr. Macknik is a founder of the Neural Correlate Society, which hosts the annual Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest, the only mixed scientist/public event of its kind. Dr. Macknik has written scripts and/or been interviewed for three popular science documentaries in the last two years, one of which (authored by Dr. Macknik, and produced by Voz Audiovisual) will broaden the participation of underrepresented groups as it was written in the Spanish and English languages for television broadcast worldwide. Dr. Macknik has chaired or served on the executive committee for 3 major international science conferences in the last 3 years (ASSC 2007, ECVP 2005, and the Tucson: Towards a Science of Consciousness 2006), and has promoted the interests of women and underrepresented groups in this capacity. The PI has chaired or presented in 17 international plenary symposia or workshops in the last 8 years, in addition to public lectures at art museums, community groups, and schools.
